Throughout its existence of more than 1200 years Aachen Cathedral has never lost its attraction.Aachen Cathedral was the first building to be awarded the distinction of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in Germany. Not only was it the Coronation Church of German kings, it is also the burial place of Charlemagne, and with its breathtaking Carolingian architecture it attracts millions of visitors to the Aachen Region every year. The Aachen Cathedral Treasury was modernised in 1995 and houses some of the most important ecclesiastical treasures of Europe. These include the gilded bust of Charlemagne (after 1349) and the Cross of Lothair (around 1000 A.D.).Alongside the Cathedral, one of the most impressive buildings in Aachen’s historical centre is the Town Hall. This Gothic building was built by the Aachen citizens in the 14th century as a sign of their civil liberty. However, the connection to the royal court could not be completely done away with, and the result was one of the most beautiful rooms of the Town Hall: the Coronation Hall.
